What to consider as an Indian International college student in USA when aiming for upcoming summer industry internship position
Non Residents or F1 visa students do not enjoy the same privileges as resident students do especially in matters of getting recruited by a US based company while maintaining F1 status, part time jobs on campus are easy to come by (easily after first year), but they do not provide the necessary industry exposure as corporations do not house their operations or offices within the campus. Now the most common situation that an international student is confronted is – that every company either wants their applying candidate to hold green card or US citizenship status.
Well let me give you a few tips regarding how Indian students should approach applying at Internships at US companies:
- Aim to apply in the first place – Understand the procedure on how to apply, only applying via online platforms such as indeed (dot) com or similar such sites might not help you reach all the positions out there, talk to your professors, seniors, staff of the university, kids who are studying with you side by side and even placement and student services department or international department thereby gathering this information will give you idea regarding current channels that you should use in order to extend your reach the most. But remember APPLYING is important, if you will not apply thoughtfully and actively and in a timely manner then your chances are anyhow going to be low in hearing the word “congratulations”.
- Interning at bigger and branded company will train you better? – Branded companies are appealing and it is very normal for budding and enthusiastic young success dreamers such as your good self to apply at such companies, but remember that when you are applying to such places then you already know in your subconscious mind that it is TOUGH to get into that company, chances of you giving your best is diminished a little and your best self won’t come our during making applying decisions, so try to apply to places which do not fall under the definition of a BRAND, focus on the POSITION and not the Name of the company, the idea should be that you being over there for your short internship should give you something in return and if it is a good match for you then you will contribute to your nurturing company as well.
- Consider internship to learn a new skill & not to only earn money – The most common mistake college students make a times is that they would take up internship in positions that they can easily and smoothly carry out, well look at it in a different way, you are supposed to learn something, a new concept or skills, develop critical thinking and or get exposed to procedures that will make you a better overall professional, take a moment to think what is it that you LACK in your self, bring about an acceptance regarding it, for instance, if you know you lack commitment and or sincerity then apply to internship positions that you will help you develop these, even to think about such an approach will compel you not to go for it, but remember you need to have a balance professional life and SKILL is important and being smart is not enough.
- Even a small position as an intern can give you better experience & insights – Let’s say that an internship position came across you that you are confused about applying at, it says that you will SHADOW and just observe and document what is happening, you might feel this is no real work. In fact this is a true short position, the company wants you to learn what is that they do, if you learn it well and document it well, show sharpness in your reporting and observation then you might be a potential international full time job candidate for them.
- Build contacts – Networking and PR is an opportunity that you get to work upon during your internship, like how when your picture or video is liked by friends and family member, then many other people see what is your picture is about, the same way you will know people in industry and you can always network with people that they know and so on.
